Have you heard about
It’s finally warming up outside and we could NOT be happier! One of our favorite spring activities is to pack a lunch and find a grassy park to have a picknick. As a mom, I worry so much about feeding my kids healthy food. One thing I definitely don’t think about is whether the grass we are eating on is safe. Did you know that grass can be filled with toxins and can be very harmful? Check it out…
How can grass be harmful?
I recently learned that most parks use harmful pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers to keep the grass GREEN and free of weeds. Two of the most commonly used herbicides on playing fields are glyphosate and 2, 4-D. The National Cancer Institute has well documented concerns with exposure to these chemicals including:
- Cancer
- disruption to the endocrine system
- Parkinson’s disease
- diseases of the kidney and liver
Even more concerning, kids are MORE at risk for these complications because they are smaller and their bodies are not as developed. Thinking about my kids rolling around in those toxins and then eating a healthy lunch just doesn’t seem right!!
What is the solution?
Our favorite yogurt company is doing something about this, which makes us love them even more! Stonyfield has started a new campaign,
Stonyfields Organic Parks Tips for your own Backyard.
Stonyfield also gave us some really helpful tips of things we can do to get involved with their Initiative in our own backyards. Their tips are:
- Do soil testing! We normally just buy product and trust it is what our lawn needs. Doing a soil test will help us figure out what products, if any, we need to be buying
- STOP using harmful pesticides! The chemicals we spray can not only harm the wildlife in our backyard, but we can bring the chemicals into our house on our shoes and clothing
- If you do need fertilizers, buy ORGANIC!
- Mow your grass to 3 inches, instead of shorter
Thanks to Stonyfield for sponsoring this post and turning our parks into Stonyfield Organic Parks to make it a healthier world for our kids!
