Tips to Take Kids to the Symphony

Utah Symphony: Bernstein at 100

No sitter? No problem! Sit back, relax, and take the kids to the gorgeous Utah Symphony at Abravanel Hall in downtown Salt Lake City.

First Thing’s First…

Snag yourself free two-hour parking at City Creek (West side). If you exceed the 2 hours, it’ll only cost you 2 bucks, which beats any street parking! Walk through Nordstrom, exit the West side, and you’ll be right in front of the venue: beautiful, vast, and well-kept. (Can we say photo op?) With a lawn so large and plush, you’ll forget you’re in a downtown city. It’s like New York City’s Central Park right here in Utah, and the perfect place for younger kids to get their wiggles out before the show.

Right This Way

You’re in! Between the golden staircase, blown glass, and unreal crystal chandeliers, you’ll think you’re in a Ritz Carlton because this place is just like their piano: grand. With cathedral high glass walls, you’ve nearly got a breath-taking 360 view. It’s the most ‘gram-worthy hall you’ll find, bragging rights included!

Utah symphony recommends arriving 30 minutes early so you and the fam can get comfortably settled with time to spare. (Don’t be late! You won’t be able to enter the theater). We’d say don’t forget to stop by concessions on your way in, but we’re sure your kids will remind you.

So It Begins

Comfy seats? Check. Leg room? Check. Trail mix? Double check! Lights, camera, action. The second the conductor brought in the orchestra, I was instantly blown away! The music, played so well-rehearsed and as in unison as their motions and facials, sounded too good to be true. Each musician’s talent and hard work emulated. Ever seen a singer live and been disappointed in the sound? The Utah Symphony sounds even better than a road trip with good bass.

Picture a Rocketship

Seriously, picture one. No one else reading this will picture a rocketship identical to yours. That’s what the live music at the symphony is like. It tells an amazing, meaningful story, completely unique to you! Tell your kids to “write” their own mental stories! Here’s a few of mine. Effortlessly, I found myself visualizing a mermaid being chased by Jaws. Then I saw Kevin McCallister running up a staircase. I also saw snow flurries resting on the trees. So, what’s your story?

Family Deal or Family STEAL?

Round up the whole crew (two adults and two children) for $30. We know, it’s Utah. So don’t worry, you can add up to 6 kids (aged 5-18) for $5 each. This deal works for both the symphony and opera. Call 801-533-NOTE to get the family deal. (Reminder: The family pricing DOES NOT apply to Utah Symphony’s family concerts).

Stay tuned for the Kids’ Club! Enjoy special events like ice cream with the musicians, letters from Thierry Fischer and Christopher McBeth, and more!
