Do you ever worry about your little one while he or she sleeps? Are they breathing? Is everything fine? What if they need help? These are some of the questions that raced through my mind every time my baby slept during those first few stressful months of life. Fortunately, I had discovered this awesome product to alleviate some of the worry I felt around nap and bedtime.
I am excited to share one of my very favorite baby products—The Owlet Smart Sock. The Owlet is essentially a pulse oximeter, which tracks your child’s heart rate and peripheral oxygen saturation. Most know pulse oximetry as a little red light they clip on your finger to track your heart rate and oxygen. It shines a little light through your skin to measure how much light is absorbed by your red blood cells, which varies depending on how much oxygen is bound to them. The Owlet is designed to track the heart rate and oxygen concentration in the baby’s blood. You will be notified if your baby’s heart rate or oxygen saturation stray outside the preset zone via an alarm or app on your smartphone or tablet. It takes caring for your child to the next level.
Let me share one of my experiences using the Owlet. One night I was home alone and my husband was at a conference for work. My three month-old daughter was asleep in the next room with her Owlet sock in place. The base station supplied with the sock was next to my bed. The usual calm green glow of the base was replaced with a flashing red light and loud alarm, notifying me that my baby’s oxygen level was below the preset zone. I ran into my daughter’s room and lifted her out of the crib. Even after waking her up, I could tell that she seemed lethargic and was not as responsive as normal.
After a quick stop at the nearest urgent care clinic, we were sent to the local children’s hospital by the attending physician. After a few tests we received the diagnosis of Bronchiolitis, a relatively common lung infection which causes congestion within the lungs and decreases the ability to breathe adequately. After a night in the hospital, she quickly recovered and is now strong and healthy.
I look back on that experience with gratitude for the technology available in the Owlet to track my baby’s heart rate and oxygen level. My daughter wore her Owlet every night until she was nine months old. I don’t think there is anything that will completely remove the stress that parents feel about their children, but I definitely felt a level of peace knowing that my baby’s heart rate and oxygen levels were within the present zones while she slept. Let’s be honest, is there a mom that couldn’t benefit from a little stress reduction during the first few months of your baby’s life?
