About the Tumbleweeds Film Festival

Have you ever taken your kiddos to a film festival? Yes, that’s right! A film festival for kids right here in Salt Lake City, Utah.  The only one in the intermountain west at that. Come participate in FREE activities! Meet and work side by side with film producers and directors to operate drones, make art, and dress up like superheros in the Club House! Twenty different countries will be represented at Utah Film Center’s 8th annual Tumbleweeds Film Festival for Children and Youth. There will be 15 feature films and 3 short film programs! Enjoy the culturally enriching media arts Workshops and FREE clubhouse activities for younger audiences. This three-day film event is one that has joined the ranks with Cannes and Utahs own Sundance Film festival, but like I said, it’s for kids!

The Tumbleweeds Clubhouse

Lets chat about the Clubhouse. The Tumbleweeds Clubhouse at the Film Festival is FREE for ALL Library Square patrons and features over 15 craft and technology activities in The City Library’s Urban Room (main lobby) and The Leonardo’s Entrance Atrium. These clubhouse activities are sponsored by local businesses and are geared toward a slightly younger audience (under 7 or 8). Kids will get hands-on doing set building, sculpting, dressing up as their future self, or a superhero! Some of our personal favorites are…

Activities at Tumbleweeds Film Festival

+ Bad Dog Art’s Color Palette Collage – Make a collage, abstract or a figure or cityscape. See how color can change the perspectives in movies, paintings, commercials and art.

Discovery Gateway Children’s Museum Silly Sculptures – Use playdough, spaghetti and marshmallows to put together sculptures big and small! Great for tiny tots.

Hand Drawn Photo Booth’s You’re A Work of Art – Get drawn by the Hand Drawn Photo Booth, a photo “machine” operated by a real-live artist.

The Clubhouse (both locations) are open from 10am-5pm, Saturday and Sunday!

The Interactive Workshops

Workshops! Workshops at the Tumbleweeds Film Festival will give kids the opportunity to connect with experts in the virtual reality, sound effects, filmmaking, and film makeup fields to deepen their appreciation for the craft and inspire them to dig deeper into the elements of a story. Learn special effects make up and VR?! So COOL! Tickets for workshops are $10 each and open to patrons up to 18 years old. Parents and chaperones may attend with a minor participating in the workshops at no cost.

The Films

Onto what you have been waiting for, the films! These carefully curated Films from around the world are sure to entertain and enlighten your children. There is a variety of movies for kids ranging from ages 4 -18.

Tickets are $7 and when you use code: SLCMOMS you can get $2 off your ticket or $10 off the family package. Here is a direct link to ticket sales. https://www.utahfilmcenter.org/twds2019/

There are both animated and live action films some of which are foreign films. No need to worry, there will be subtitles in English and a reader! Headphones will be available to anyone who wants them at no extra cost. One of the films we are looking forward to the most is SUPA MODA. Filmed in Kenya and Germany, this is a story about Jo, a witty 9-year old terminally ill girl, is taken back to her rural village to live out the rest of her short life. Her only comfort during these dull times are her dreams of being a Superhero, which prove to be something her rebellious teenage sister Mix, overprotective mother Kathryn and the entire village of Maweni think they can fulfill. Also don’t miss this…

Movie Theater with Audience

On Friday, there are 2 different FREE films: LOUIS & LUCA AND THE BIG CHEESE RACE at 10am, and INTO THE WHO KNOWS! at 1pm. They’re both extra freebie add-ons, and neither one is the opening film – the opening night film is SUPA MODO.

One of our favorite perks of the Tumbleweeds Film Festival is that you will get free admission to the Leonardo. Just for coming to the Tumbleweed Film Festival you will get to experience all of what Library Square has to offer. Your Tumbleweeds film and workshop tickets will give you free access to the Leonardo on March 2nd and 3rd. The clubhouse activities are free to all patrons, no tickets required.

Come Celebrate film, culture, diversity, technology and community with your littles. See you this weekend at the Tumbleweed Film Festival!
